COMPOSITE PRESSURE VESSELS
for Compressed Gases, Liquids Cryogens and Propellants
Built to Specifications
Amalga Composites, Inc. has the capability and expertise to produce built-to-spec fiber-reinforced composite pressure vessels in a wide range of sizes and operating pressures. Amalga Composites, Inc. can meet the highest design and production standards.
Materials
Composite pressure vessels are commonly constructed with a filament overwrap of fiberglass, carbon fiber or Kevlar in customized resin systems.
- Fiberglass - the most frequently selected filament material for manufacturing pressure vessels, has excellent tensile properties and is the least costly of all materials available.
- Carbon Fiber - used when stiffness and weight considerations are critical. When a metal liner is required, the elongation of the liner and the fiber reinforcement must be matched. The tensile strength of carbon fiber is comparable to fiberglass, but the tensile modulus of carbon fiber is 4 times higher.
- Kevlar - used when exceptional strength and weight reduction is necessary. Kevlar has a high tensile strength and a high tensile modulus.
Pressure Vessel Applications
Composite pressure vessels are used in a wide variety of applications. Amalga Composites has produced pressure vessels that have been used for:
- Air suspension reservoirs for passenger rail cars 5000 cubic inch, 150 psi
- Pneumatic brake reservoirs for passenger rail cars 7000 cubic inch, 150 psi
- Air propulsion reservoir for passenger rail cars 900 cubic inch, 150 psi
- Portable water storage tanks for passenger rail cars 250 gallon, 45 psi
- Air starter reservoirs for diesel engines (45 and 60 gallon, 150 psi)
- Nitrogen gas storage vessel 180 gallon, 400 psi
- Nitrogen gas storage vessel (30 gallon, 800 psi)
- Propane gas storage vessel (45 and 60 gallon, 400 psi)
- Aircraft water storage vessel (80 gallon, 80 psi)
- Compressed natural gas fuel tanks 5 to 55 gallon, 3600 psi
- Air storage tanks (portable air supply)
- Air spring reservoir for machine tools
- Various prototype and experimental pressure vessels
