AMALGA COMPOSITES, INC. DEVELOPS NEW COATING FOR COMPOSITE ROLLERS

(WEST ALLIS, WI) August 23, 2006 – Amalga Composites, Inc. (ACI) was approached by a large converting company and tasked with replacing a hard anodized aluminum idler roller with a carbon fiber composite roller.  The lower weight composite roller would allow the converter to operate his equipment a higher line speed than he could attain with the heavier aluminum idler roller. 

Replacing the aluminum roller with a carbon fiber composite roller was not a challenge for ACI's experienced engineers.  The difficulty was in replacing the hard anodized aluminum coating with an alternate coating that would wear at least as well as the anodized coating and could be used in direct food contact.  Various ceramic coating options were considered but were rejected because they were not cost effective.

ACI's engineers went back to work to develop a new proprietary coating that would meet the needs of this customer.  The result was a new coating that could be used in direct food contact, dubbed FGA-Z coating.  Field experience over the past seven years has shown that this new coating out lasts the old hard anodized aluminum coating by a factor of 3.  In addition, this coating can be replaced on existing rollers eliminating the need to replace the entire structure.
